An IP (Internet Protocol) address is a unique numerical label assigned to every device connected to the internet. It acts like a digital home address, allowing data packets to be routed to the correct destination across the global network infrastructure.
IPv4 uses 32-bit addresses (e.g. 203.0.113.1) supporting roughly 4.3 billion unique addresses. IPv6 uses 128-bit addresses (e.g. 2001:db8::1) and supports an astronomically larger number, solving the address exhaustion problem as the internet continues to grow.
Yes. Every time you visit a website, your browser sends a connection request that includes your IP address. Websites, servers, and online services can all log and see this address. It cannot be hidden without using a VPN, proxy, or Tor.
Your IP address can reveal your approximate geographic location (usually city or region level), your Internet Service Provider, and whether you are using a VPN or proxy. It does not reveal your exact home address, name, or personal identity on its own.
A Virtual Private Network (VPN) routes your internet traffic through a server in another location, replacing your real IP address with the VPN server's IP. Websites see the VPN server's address rather than your real one. However, VPNs can still be detected by advanced analysis methods.

IP geolocation is an approximation. ISPs often route traffic through regional hubs, so the detected location may show a nearby city or the ISP's headquarters rather than your exact location. Accuracy is typically within 25–50 miles for most users.
Most home broadband connections use a dynamic IP address that can change when you restart your router or after a period of inactivity. Business connections and servers often use a static IP address that never changes. Mobile data connections change IP very frequently.
