A 502 Bad Gateway means a proxy or gateway server received an invalid response from the upstream server. A 503 Service Unavailable means the server is temporarily unable to handle the request, often due to maintenance or overload. Both are usually temporary. WebsiteStatus will report the exact code so you know what is happening.
When a site redirects, the server tells the browser to load a different URL instead of the one requested. This is common when sites move from HTTP to HTTPS, from www to non-www (or vice versa), or when pages are reorganized. WebsiteStatus follows up to 5 redirects and shows you the final URL the server delivered.
For most websites, checking once a day is sufficient. For business-critical sites, checking every few hours or setting up automated monitoring is recommended. WebsiteStatus is designed for manual, on-demand checks — each result is saved and gets its own shareable URL so you can track the status history of any domain over time.
Client errors (4xx) mean the request was malformed or the resource does not exist — for example, 404 Not Found or 403 Forbidden. Server errors (5xx) mean the server failed to process a valid request — for example, 500 Internal Server Error or 503 Service Unavailable. WebsiteStatus categorizes each check accordingly so you know where the problem lies.
If a domain has expired, DNS records stop resolving and the site becomes unreachable. WebsiteStatus will report the site as Offline because no server responds at that address. If you suspect your domain expired, check with your domain registrar. Renewing the domain and restoring DNS records will bring the site back online.
A response time under 200 milliseconds is excellent. Between 200 and 500 milliseconds is average for most websites. Anything over 1 second may feel slow to visitors. Response times above 3 seconds can hurt search rankings and user experience. WebsiteStatus measures the exact round-trip time in milliseconds.
